Protecting the Community - Watsons Road - August 2008

On a beautiful day in August, the Brigade was asked to respond to a grass fire on a property along Watsons Road, Ripley. Units RV51 and RV52 responded and were met with a challenging fire tangled up in large areas of the dreaded 'bladey' grass. Flames up to four (4) metres high were encountered as erratic winds added to the problem.

The incident was reported at approximately 13:00hrs. It took two hours to get the fire fully contained and under control with mop up duties another two hours. Approximately 40 acres of pasture was burnt off but no structures were threatened. The state of the paddock indicated that the recent frosts have killed off a significant proportion of the grass and the cure rate is now well over 90% making for a high fire danger until further rains come.

Dave was kept busy on RV52 along with Squirt.

Matt M, Adam and George had fun on RV51.

Adam trying on an old pair of 'Overalls'; not quite like to his liking. An hour earlier he had been sitting in a dentist's chair.

Fire under control.

A new view for the property owner but the fire was kept away from their house and sheds.
