    Brigade Training

The brigade has an active training program every year. To check out the schedule for 2012, please Click Here.

May Highlights

With many of the brigade's members about to undertake FMS (Firefighter Minimum Skills) Assessments in May; extra training was organised along with a small hazard reduction burn.

The team headed to South Ripley for the burn.

There's no better way to learn about fire fighter safety and the science of fire such as radiant heat than to experience it.

The locals were very friendly; luckily this wasn't a Hungi.

April Highlights

One of the highlights of training in April was a visit to Camira Urban Station (46). SO Lance Mullins and his crew played host to just under 30 members of the Brigade and ran through important areas of cooperation in operations such as communications and equipment.

Getting an appreciation of the specialist work undertaken by Urban Firefighters.

Rookie Training headed to the paddocks covering hand tools.

Learning the A-Z to motors, pumps and hose work.

Drip Torches.

and putting fire out.

The brigade came together at Fischer Road to walk through some iZone Fire scenarios including crew leadership, vehicle positioning, strategies and safety.

March Highlights

On Saturday 31st March; the Brigade attended a joint Ipswich and Esk Group training day at Fernvale. The program was made up of a variety of operational skills and drills as well as some awareness sessions on Urban appliances.

On Sunday 25th March; the Officers and Crew leaders attended a training session with Urban crews from 645M and 643A. The exercise was an initial understanding of issues associated with incident management of a fire that grows from a bushfire into an Izone fire. A field visit to Deebing Heights was organised to add to the situational awareness of the exercise.

This in the field desk top exercise will hopefully be the first in a series of cross training initiatives designed to better prepare the brigade for the coming fire season. Thank you to the Urban Crews and Ripley members who attended.

In the afternoon, normal monthly training was held.

The first task was to revisit the use of our Back Pack Blowers

These valuable tools help clearing breaks etc.

The team also looked at the Collar Dam. This temporary water storage device can hold 5000L of water and positioned to help maintain crews in areas where there are no available natural water sources.

Finally; crews practiced using the main pumps and Case 4's (drawing water from a static supply).

The March theory night featured guest speaker ATSO Kaye Healing who delivered an IZone Awareness Session.

February Highlights

For day training; with rain in the back drop, the brigade undertook an exercise in safety, communications and driving. The Incident Support Trailer was set up as a Command Point and then all appliances were dispatched in different directions to assess radio coverage.

The ISU can be set up in under five minutes for basic radio relay purposes or 30 minutes for full Control Point format with awnings etc.

New members were run through the full set-up of the ISU which can operate in various formats including Incident Control or a Staging Area.

Equipped with UHF, VHF and CB radios, crews were required to assess the reception of all radio types on the next part of the exercise.

Typical Brigade radios (VHF) had a usable range up to nearly 20 kilometres in some areas; slightly better than the UHF options.

Safety has been the theme of the bulk of night training in February including Burn Over Drills.

January Highlights

The Brigade started training for 2012 with Skills and Drills.

The team split into teams looking at Stand pipes, Hoses, Drip Torches, Tools and Knap-Sacks.

It was a case of indoor training thanks to the rain that would just not go away.

Stand pipes and hoses.

Hand tools.

Running through new SOP's including new Pre and Post Turn-Out Sheets

PPE Checks also had to be done with a celebration for Ian F who has just passed his FM1 assessments.
