The
Brigade is involved with Community Ceremonies from time to time and
one such occasion was at the Beaufort Bomber Memorial Ceremony held
on the 27th May 2009. Brigade Members were part of the ceremony to honour
the tragic death of four airman in April 1944. Their Beaufort Bomber
was on a gunnery / bombing training flight when it crashed at what is
now known as Springfield near the Greenbank army training facility.
Family
members and descendents from the four families joined in the service
which was organised by Delfin (Property Developer) and the Ipswich City
Council. The service was attended by a number of dignitaries from the
Ipswich City Council, Goodna and other RSL groups, RAAF Amberley, Ipswich
Thistle Pipe Band (Piper), Salvation Army (Bugler), the Springfield
College band, various schools, the Ripley Valley rural Fire Brigade
and members of the community. School students planted trees to honour
the crew individually.
The
Brigade has had a significant involvement in the memorial being established.
During a bushfire in the area in 2000, Brigade Members found the remains
of the Beaufort Bomber wreck. After many meetings and taking people
to the crash site, it was decided that the Goodna RSL (Vivienne Stanbury)
and the Brigade would seek support to have a memorial established to
honour these men. The memorial is at Grande Park, Grande Avenue (off
the Springfield Greenbank Arterial).
