On
a beautiful Monday in July, a smoke plum rose above Yamanto to herald
the start of the 2009/2010 fire season. Jim our Fire Warden called it
in and immediately knew it was at least a two appliance job. It actually
turned out to be a full Brigade response that was eventually required
as winds and considerable fuel made this large grass fire quite challenging.

Probably
the largest issue was the smoke hazard that closed the new Centenary
Hwy for nearly 30 minutes. back burning was used to contain much of
the fire along the western sector.

There
is an alarming amount of fuel in many areas after two years of good
rains and minimal fire activity.

Yes
one of our biggest concerns happened not once but twice. The recent
rains added the hazard of getting bogged in seemingly open ground a
reality.

to the rescue.

It's
all right Brain it happens to us all; but I'm not sure about the second
time :)

It
was Matt's first job as Incident Controller and a good test run for
the ISU Trailer. Well done Matt; a full Brigade response managed within
an afternoon with minimal paperwork.

After
having a day of semi-cured grass smoke, we wonder why anyone would pay
for cigarettes.

residents needed coaching on evacuation procedures.

At
the end of the Day, crews from RV41, RV51, RV52 and RV81 contained the
fire with some eye opening experiences about the potential of the fire
season to come.
Unfortunately
the Brigade was responded to the same area the next day. Those are the
breaks where dodgy circumstances arise but that's another story.
