Protecting the Community - Willowbank Mine October 2009

On the 25th October, the Brigade was responded to a large grassfire behind the Cunningham Highway at an open cut coal mine at Willowbank to support Mt Forbes RFB and 645A. The initial report was that of a car fire but the main threat became a grass fire which quickly raced up the hill towards a mining facility. As well as 645A, Mt Forbes 51 and 71; Ripley Valley RFB responded RV51 and RV52. Both Helitack appliances were also responded. And then there was the monster truck. Luckily the fire was quickly brought under control.

Enter the Monster Truck; arguably the best land based fire fighting appliance known to man kind. Not sure of the technical specifications but the operator had a remote controlled water cannon that could reach nearly 50 metres. The water tank capacity must have been over 20,000 litres. And you'd have to call it an all terrain vehicle.

Jason never misses a photo opportunity with a new toy.

Needles to say, blacking out went very quickly.

Unfortunately it wouldn't fit into the Station. We'd also hate to have to change a flat tyre.

Bowlsie, Tony and Matt from RV52 fill up at the end of the day.

Area made safe, thanks to all Members who attended.
