Protecting the Community - Swanbank Fires - October 2011

On Sunday 2nd October, the Brigade received a Firecall to attend a bushfire in the Swanbank area to support a number of Urban units. That first incident response was largely helping to tidy up the fire which the Urbans had done well to contain. Ripley Valley 52 with some help later on from Greenbank 52 made the area safe and discovered plenty of boggy paddock; but that's another story. Unfortunately, it was not to be the last call out to a fire in Swanbank for that day. In fact, two more fires started mysteriously through the night.

At approximately 8PM, the second Firecall was received.

Crews arrived to find another area well alight.

Just when the evening humidity was supposed to kick in and calm a fire; it became evident that the considerable fuel loadings had changed the dynamics of the fire.

Luckily an Ipswich Striketeam had just arrived back from a job in the Lockyer Valley and were able to help. Swanbank Control was set up.

Crews from Mt Forbes, Pine Mountain and Ripley Valley RFB's once again teamed up to work the fire.

Crews set about putting in a back burn around the fire.

After several hours, the fire was contained, area made safe.

Just as crews were about to head home, another fire was called in to Firecom at another part of Swanbank.

The fire was burning next to the Cunningham Highway. Once again; even though the time was approaching 1AM in the morning; the fire behaviour was quite active. Cunningham Hwy Control was set-up.

Assett protection took on a new dimension.

Crews got around the fire using the train lines.

and yes; getting a flat tyre near train lines is Murphy's Law at it's best.

Crews did a great job; some finishing up as the sun started to colour the sky. A special thank you to all crews, especially those crews from Mt Forbes and Pine Mountain RFB's who came and helped.
