Protecting the Community - South Ripley August 2011

On a windy evening on the 18th August, the brigade was responded to a grass fire threatening houses along Ripley Road at South Ripley. Due to the nature of the call out; 645J, 645Y and 643A had already been responded and were joined by RV51 and RV52.

Approximately two hectares of grass was alight on arrival working up a hill rapidly. The two houses nearby were still several hundred metres away. The main areas of activity were around log piles spread out through out the paddock.

With so many crews on scene; the fire was quickly brought under control. This was the view looking west back at Ripley Road from the hill as the last of the western flank was worked on.

The southern flank where the fuel was a bit more sparse.

After the main fire perimeter had been extinguished, the Urban crews bowed out and the Ripley Valley crews continued to make the area safe. A number of small back burns were done around log piles so that embers being blown in the strong wind to unburnt country wouldn't cause us more grief later on. (RV51 crewed by Gary Chapman, Tracey Oliverie and Jim Runham; RV52 crewed by George Ganzenmuller, Steve Woodbridge and Matt Phillips).

Job well done; time to go home.
