On
Friday evening, 30th December 2011, the Brigade received a call from
our neighbors at Flinders Peak RFB asking for some assistance with an
unusual fire that had been burning all day in billy goat country. The
Brigade was soon activated through Firecom and Ripley Valley RFB sent
RV41, RV51 and RV52. The job was mainly to help the tired crews on the
ground to tidy things up but the fire had consumed nearly 10 hectares
of land; some of it densely treed. Arriving crews were amazed at how
much terrain had been burnt out given the green grass and humidity.
However; there was a lot of dead fuel there and variable strong winds
had also made the job more challenging.

Making
the area safe around old burning trees was the main challenge.

A
patience game sometimes.

Let's
hope this is the last fire of the year.
