South East Regional Fire Fighter Championships

The Brigade participates in the South East Regional Fire Fighting Championships held each year. The most recent event was held at Mt Tamborine in April 2012. The Team Ripley for 2012 consisted: (from left) Steven, Adrian, Ashley, Tracey (Assist. Coach), Corey and Gary (Coach).

There were 21 teams from across the region competing. The format of the two days included numerous different exercises that tested operational capabilities of teams of both an urban and rural nature. Three identical Auxiliary pumpers were used by all competing teams.

A little bit of rain didn't damped the atmosphere; they were already soaked.

Congratulations to the Guys who came 14th in the overall competition. They put in a great effort for their first ever go at the Championships.

Our neighbours at Pine Mountain RFB got 15th.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Permanent, auxiliary and volunteer firefighters from over 45 stations/brigades participated in teams, community displays, track workers, and many other tasks;
- 21 teams competed with a number being composite station/brigade teams (several late team withdrawals owing to work commitments, etc);
- Permanent team from Beenleigh and a VCE Team from Hattonvale/Summerholm participated;
- Emergency Services Cadet Team from Logan also participated in several events (supported by Chambers Flat Rurals);
- Competition logistics coordinated by Captain Lyn Roveglia and supported by Mt Tamborine station auxiliaries and volunteers from across the region;
- Rural Volunteer Firefighters formed the Track Make-up Team and worked tirelessly over the weekend (no task was too difficult for this team of volunteers);
- Even with the rain, a reasonable response from the local Mt Tamborine community to view the competition and visit the Safe Community Displays;
- Safe Community Displays focused on Prepare/Act/Survive and Fire Safety with several displays staffed by SER VCE's and Emergency Service Cadets/Volunteers;
- Tent city a success with over 200 accommodated at the grounds Fri/Sat nights (inc: families and children) with many bringing their own camping equipment and caravans; and
- All meals provided at the grounds brought those attending together in fellowship.......strengthened relationships/friendships and good discussion on frontline operations.

PREVIOUS YEARS

Here is a selection of earlier competitions such as held in Ipswich and Gatton. On the 17th and 18th April 2010, five of the Brigades Members competed in this years Games. The Team was of Amy Hartness, Michael McCall, Warren Williams, Neil Irwin and Matt Mulroney. The games consist of 10 events testing the teams ability to complete core skills (albeit urban skills for 9 events).

The main competition for the weekend was between Ripley Valley and Pine Mountain Brigades with Ripley narrowly defeating our friends to the North (Ripley came second last).

Everybody had a great time both in the events and at the after hours drinks sessions. We are certainly looking forward to competing again next year, anybody interested in joining us please see Matt M or Amy H.

Another recent event was held at Limestone Park in Ipswich on the 20-21 June 2009. After many months of training both teams were ready and primed to show their stuff.

Fire trucks, appliances and equipment of all descriptions were set up at Limestone Park.

Teams from all parts of the service attended with Urban, Auxiliary and Rural Units from as far away as Mt Tambourine and the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

The second Ripley Valley RFB team also getting ready.

Case 4 time trials, getting water from a static point to a target. The real challenge was understanding how to use the equipment on a strange appliance but that is what team work is all about and part of the fun of the day.

The following images are a selection from the various training sessions in the lead up to the competition.

On the final day, down came the rain as the curtain closed.

Learning about Urban appliances; looking at the 'Country Spare' unit.
